    LIFE FORCE MISSION IN BORNEO

How to help protect the Borneo jungle?

When I visited Borneo for the first time, I imagined the world's oldest rainforest as this beautiful, biodiverse ecosystem. Instead, I saw endless rows of palm oil plantations. It was horrifying. I made a commitment to use my art to tell the story to raise awareness about eternal destruction.

In the past 20 years, 63 million acres of forest cover was lost, about the size of the state of Colorado. During these years, almost half of the critical lowland forest cover that was left was destroyed, endangering many species including orangutans. As Borneo continues to diminish, the rainforest is losing its ability to sequester carbon. In 2015, for example, widespread burning of peatlands in Borneo and Sumatra released an estimated 1.75 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, equivalent to the annual emissions of Japan. In some months that year, the daily Co2 emissions even exceed that of the entire US economy.

An organization that I believe is doing impactful work in Borneo is Health in Harmony, with whom we are partnering for this art collection to raise funds and awareness. They have conducted extensive research on how to reverse climate change and combat deforestation through human-centered solutions by engaging with local communities, indigenous people, and even illegal loggers.

Why is the jungle being destroyed?

Poverty and lack of healthcare are major drivers of environmental destruction. When communities are struggling to make ends meet, how could they have the privilege some of us have of choosing how they want to provide for their families or how to care about their environment? Generally, they have to participate in whatever industry is most lucrative for their survival. Palm oil and logging are the most profitable industries in Borneo and because their production employs hundreds of thousands of people, it’s only realistic that many of the local people are involved in that industry.

      Health in Harmony

Health in Harmony implemented local clinics to reverse deforestation by offering a 70% discount for community members who commit to cease logging in the National Park. If locals do not have the resources to pay, they have the option to grow seedlings to fund their healthcare. As a result, they contribute to the restoration of the rainforest instead of the destruction.

Another impactful strategy this organization does is to hire community members for all reforestation activities including seedling cultivation, preparation for reforestation planting, tree planting, weeding and maintenance at reforested sites, and fire patrols. This revives a grassroots indigenous tradition of taking care of the forest and keeps the members engaged in its protection.  Over time as these seedlings mature, the trees produced absorb carbon. The healthcare and livelihood programs we discussed that reduce logging protect existing carbon from being released into the atmosphere. You can learn more about Health in Harmony on their website attached in the link section.

If there are no changes made to healthcare and easily-accessible livelihoods in Borneo, the local communities will have no choice but to continue participating in environmentally destructive practices. Not only that, but poverty will only get worse if Borneo does not protect its national forest as one day there will be no more trees, which will permanently put thousands of people out of work with no other viable alternatives. Deforestation is not, and will never be a sustainable option for the future.

My heart bleeds seeing the destruction of the precious Bornean jungle. Things have to be addressed and this is my contribution to funnel my creativity and life force for this cause. This project is a symbol of unlimited possibilities in the creative process.
